A staffing shortage is the culprit, once again, of cancellations between BC Ferries’ busiest routes Wednesday evening.

The company cancelled the Spirit of Vancouver Island leaving Swartz Bay at 7:00 p.m. and departing Tsawwassen at 9:00 p.m. because of crew availability.

“We require a specific number of crew members on board the vessel to ensure the safety of our passengers in the unlikely event of an emergency and to comply with Transport Canada regulations,” BC Ferries said.

Customers with reservations will be notified and will be refunded fees and fares.

“The decision to cancel a sailing in these circumstances is made when we have exhausted all options to find replacement crew,” BC Ferries stated. “That said, if circumstances change and replacement crew become available, we would notify customers immediately.”

Up-to-date sailing information can be found on BC Ferries Twitter, the BC Ferries website, or by calling 1-888-223-3779.
