As strong winds continue to gust over Vancouver Island, BC Ferries has cancelled numerous sailings on major routes Friday morning.

Sailings between Nanaimo, Vancouver and Victoria are affected, as well as the Cortes Island and Quadra Island route.

The 9 a.m. sailing leaving Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen has been cancelled, as has the returning 11 a.m. sailing departing from Vancouver.

The sailings in between Vancouver and Nanaimo are also affected. The 10:15 a.m. sailing departing the Tsawwassen terminal and the 12:45 p.m. sailing leaving the Duke Point terminal are cancelled.

The ferry expected to leave the Heriot Bay terminal on Quadra Island at 11:05 a.m. will remain in the dock, as well as the 11:50 p.m. terminal departing the Whaletown terminal on Cortes Island.

Environment Canada says winds of up to 70 km/hour Friday morning over the Southern Gulf Islands and sections of Greater Victoria near Haro Strait. Winds are expected to ease before noon.

If you’ve already checked in for your booking and choose not to travel, you can return to the ticket booth to check back out. BC Ferries confirms your fares and any reservation fees will be automatically refunded to your original form of payment.

Those who have checked in without a booking can also return to the ticket booth to check out and will also receive a refund for the fares paid at the terminal.

If your sailing has been cancelled but you have not checked in, BC Ferries says you will be notified of the cancellation and any fares and fees will be refunded. You can decide to wait for the next sailing, and if so, you’ll be loaded on the next available sailing based on order of arrival at the terminal and deck space availability.
