BC Ferries says it cancelled a boatload of sailings on various routes due to "extreme" weather conditions.

BC Ferries says it cancelled a boatload of sailings on various routes due to “extreme” weather conditions on Wednesday.

According to an advisory issued by BC Ferries on Wednesday, the 10:40 a.m. and 1 p.m. sailings from Departure Bay and Horseshoe Bay have been cancelled.

“Ahead of an approaching low, southeast winds of 60 to 80 km/hour over exposed coastal sections of East Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast will persist today. Winds will ease this evening as the low weakens. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage,” the company said in an advisory on its website.

BC Ferries also cancelled the 6:15 a.m. and 9:55 a.m. sailings from Little River-Comox as well as the 8:05 a.m. and 11:05 a.m. sailings from Powell River.

Morning sailings between Port MacNeill, Alert Bay and Sointula were cancelled as were multiple morning sailings between Hornby Island and Denman Island East-Gravelly Bay.

BC Ferries says it doesn’t take the decision to cancel sailings lightly but chose to do so today in an effort to keep passengers and crew safe.

“The safety of our passengers and crew is of primary importance to us. We don’t take the decision to cancel sailings lightly, as we know customers rely on us to get to their destinations. We will resume service as soon as it is safe to do so,” BC Ferries said in a statement on its website.

The company recommends those who are planning on travelling on Wednesday (Dec. 30) to visit the travel advisory section of their website.
