BC Ferries has cancelled several sailings between Victoria and Vancouver due to mechanical issues with the Coastal Celebration vessel Wednesday.

The following four sailings have been cancelled Wednesday:

  • 2 p.m. departing Swartz Bay (Victoria)
  • 4 p.m. departing Tsawwassen (Vancouver)
  • 6 p.m. departing Swartz Bay (Victoria)
  • 8 p.m. departing Tsawwassen (Vancouver)

The 10 a.m. sailing departing from Swartz Bay and the noon sailing departing from Tsawwassen were at risk of cancellation Wednesday morning, but were later cleared to sail, according to BC Ferries.

The cancellations come as mechanical issues with the Coastal Celebration’s propulsion system continue.

Several sailings were cancelled or at risk of cancellation starting Monday.

On Monday evening, BC Ferries told CHEK News that oil was detected coming from the vessel’s propeller hub.

The mechanical concern comes weeks after the Coastal Celebration underwent a lengthy refit.

The vessel went in for its annual refit in June, which was then extended due issues with the ferry’s stern tube bearings and the rudder stock.

The extended refit aboard the Coastal Celebration led to cancellations during the Canada Day long weekend.
