There are more than 80 new cases of COVID-19 on Vancouver Island.

British Columbia health officials revealed on Monday that 1,478 new cases of COVID-19, including 88 in Island Health, were identified over the weekend.

Officials also announced that eight people in B.C. also died from the virus over the weekend.

The total number of recorded cases in B.C. is now at 80,672 while the death toll climbs to 1,363.

Of the new cases, 327 were recorded in Vancouver Coastal Health, 857 were in Fraser Health, 88 in Island Health, 92 in Interior Health, and 114 in Northern Health.

There are currently 4,464 active cases in the province, 236 people in hospital — 65 of whom are in intensive care — and 8,210 people under active public health monitoring due to possible exposure to an identified case.

A total of 74,776 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19.

Island Health

According to the latest information posted on the BCCDC‘s dashboard, there are 324 active cases of COVID-19 on Vancouver Island.

There are 17 people are currently in hospital due to COVID-19 on the Island, three of whom are in critical care.

A total of 732 tests for the deadly virus have been performed in the region in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Island Health reported 303 active cases on Vancouver Island in its latest update. Of those active cases, 44 are in the South Island, 188 are in Central Island, and 71 are in the North Island.

Island Health’s data often lags behind the BCCDC’s data due to a “difference in timing of reporting across laboratory and public health data sources.”

Since the pandemic began, the Island Health region has recorded 2,403 cases and 26 deaths from the virus, and 2,051 recoveries.

The increase in cases comes after a handful of Vancouver Island schools reported recent COVID-19 exposures over the weekend. Island Health on Monday also declared an outbreak of COVID-19 at a Glacier View Lodge in Courtenay.
