British Columbia health officials on Tuesday reported 501 new COVID-19 cases and one death since their last update on Aug. 16.

Officials say the person who died resided in the Island Health region. It’s the first time since late May that someone on Vancouver Island has died after becoming infected with COVID-19.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. climbs to 157,014 while the death toll is now at 1,781.

Of the new cases, 28 were in Island Health, 92 were recorded in Vancouver Coastal Health, 139 were in Fraser Health, 205 were in Interior Health, and 35 were in Northern Health.

There are currently 5,296 active cases in the province and 111 people in hospital — 51 of whom are in intensive care.

A total of 149,847 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while 7,248,039 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide.

Today’s data was released as a statement to the media.

Island Health

There are 282 active cases — 27 in North Island, 96 in Central Island and 159 in South Island — and seven people currently in hospital on Vancouver Island, three of whom are in critical care.

Over the past 24 hours, there were 10,292 doses of vaccine administered on Vancouver Island. Of those doses, eight were AstraZeneca, 2,245 were Moderna and 8,039 doses were Pfizer.

A total of 1,088,970 vaccine doses — 47.3 per cent of those are second doses — have been administered on Vancouver Island. This includes 32,4568 doses of AstraZeneca, 268,501 doses of Moderna and 787,901 doses of Pfizer.

Since the pandemic began, there have been 5,719 cases reported, 42 deaths, 267 total hospitalizations, and 5,345 recoveries recorded on Vancouver Island.

Editor’s note: The BCCDC lists the active case count for Vancouver Island at 307, which is 25 more cases than what Island Health has reported. However, there are often discrepancies between the figures due to “differences in reporting” timeframes between the two agencies.
