British Columbia health officials on Monday reported 1,434 new COVID-19 cases and one death since their last update on Aug. 13.

From Friday to Saturday there were 532 new cases; from Saturday to Sunday there were 441 new cases; from Sunday to Monday (Aug. 16) there were 461 new cases identified in the province.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. now stands at 156,513 at while the death toll climbs to 1,780.

Of the new cases, 198 were recorded in Vancouver Coastal Health, 316 were in Fraser Health, 112 were in Island Health, 734 were in Interior Health, and 74 were in Northern Health.

There are currently 5,090 active cases in the province and 104 people in hospital — 47 of whom are in intensive care.

A total of 149,553 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while 7,230,961 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide.

It is unclear exactly how many of the new cases identified in B.C. are people who are vaccinated or unvaccinated because the provincial government does not provide a breakdown of cases by vaccination status on a daily basis.

Today’s data was released as a statement to the media.

Island Health

Island Health has identified 266 active cases on Vancouver Island — 25 in North Island, 87 in Central Island, 154 in South Island.

It’s worth noting that the BCCDC’s dashboard indicates that there are 307 active cases on Vancouver Island, which is a difference of 41 cases. Island Health has said the discrepancies are due to “differences in reporting timeframes” between the two agencies.

There are currently seven people in hospital, four of whom are in critical care. On Aug. 11, there were just two people in hospital, both of whom were in critical care. Though hospitalizations have increased, there still hasn’t been a recorded death on the Island in more than four weeks.
