British Columbia health officials have reported 2,491 new cases and 17 deaths from COVID-19 since their last update on April 23.

British Columbia health officials have reported 2,491 new cases and 17 deaths from COVID-19 since their last update on April 23.

From Friday to Saturday there were 881 new cases, from Saturday to Sunday there were 847 new cases and in the last 24 hours there were 763 new cases.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. climbs to 126,249 while the province’s death toll now stands at 1,571.

Of the new cases, 466 were recorded in Vancouver Coastal Health, 1,632 were in Fraser Health, 82 in Island Health, 206 in Interior Health, and 104 in Northern Health and one case was in someone who normally resides outside of Canada.

There are currently 8,199 active cases in the province, 484 people in hospital — 158 of whom are in intensive care — and 12,340 people under active public health monitoring due to possible exposure to an identified case.

A total of 116,241 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while more than 1.6 million doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide.

During Monday’s update Dr. Bonnie Henry, the provincial health officer for B.C., said one of the people who died over the weekend resided in a long-term care home dealing with an outbreak of the virus and that all of the deaths were people aged 50 and above.

“This shows us how devastating this virus can be on people who are older,” she said.

Henry also noted that, unlike other provinces, B.C. has not seen an increased number of people dying from COVID at home. She said while hospitals are crammed right now, they’re still able to care for people regardless of whether they have the virus or not.

“Our hospitals are absolutely stretched right now but our doctors and nurses and care staff are there to provide the service that people need,” she said. “Our emergency departments are ready and active and safe for people to go whether it is for COVID or non-COVID-related emergencies.”

Of those active cases, 172 are in the South Island, 71 are in Central Island, and 22 are in the North Island.

Island Health’s data often lags behind the BCCDC’s data due to a “difference in timing of reporting across laboratory and public health data sources.”

Over the course of the pandemic, the Island Health region has reported 4,540 cases and 35 deaths while 227 people have been hospitalized and 4,190 people have recovered from the virus.
