The BC Coroners Service says that one person has died at a Victoria homeless camp over the weekend.

The incident took place at the encampment located near Royal Athletic Park in the 900-block of Caledonia Avenue.

Patrol officers say they were called to the temporary sheltering area in the parking lot just before 5 p.m. on Sunday evening after receiving a report that a deceased person had been discovered there.

At this time details are limited, however, the BC Coroners Service has confirmed the death as well.

“The BC Coroners Service was notified of a death [Sunday] at that location and the coroner is currently investigating to determine all the facts. As per the Coroners Act, we cannot confirm or release identification,” reads a statement from the coroners service.

An investigation is currently ongoing from the service.

Victoria Police have stated that officers have concluded their investigation into the incident and do not believe the death to be suspicious.

Officers add that they’ve notified the person’s family of their loved one’s passing.

The BC Coroners Service has taken over the investigation. Further inquiries can be directed to them.

Towards the end of 2020, BC Housing facilitated a relocation of several campers to the Royal Athletic Park parking lot following a storm that washed out Central Park and caused significant damage to multiple tents.

At the time of the storm in late December, between 45-50 people were relocated to the paved lot, which BC Housing says will provide higher and drier ground.

CHEK is awaiting further details about this weekend’s incident and will update this story as more information is learned.
