Free Reformed Church in Chilliwack, B.C., continued to hold services despite COVID-19 restrictions. Church leaders argue that restricting the gatherings violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Three churches in British Columbia have been fined nearly $20,000 for breaking the province’s COVID-19 restrictions.

According to an RCMP press release, officers in Chilliwack recently charged three churches with eight counts of failure to comply with the provincial health officer’s orders — resulting in a combined total of $18,400 in fines.

The fines were issued after Chilliwack RCMP, the release notes, responded to reports of people gathering at three different churches in the region on the morning’s Dec. 6 and Dec. 13.

RCMP say while their officers investigated the complaints, they worked with local and provincial health officials as well as the BC Prosecution Service in the “education and enforcement” of the province’s current COVID-19 health regulations.
