Deputy Provincial Health Officer Dr. Réka Gustafson provides an update on novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on August 17, 2020.

A replacement for retired Island Health Chief Medical Health Officer. Dr. Richard Stanwick has been named, and she’s a familiar face.

Dr. Réka Gustafson will move into the role formerly occupied by Stanwick, and has also been named Island Health’s new vice president for population and public health.

Gustafson previously served as the province’s deputy provincial health officer under Dr. Bonnie Henry, and also as the vice president of public health and wellness for the Provincial Health Services Authority.

In a news release, Island Health says Gustafson will “lead Island Health’s population and public health teams as they continue to respond to the toxic drug supply crisis and pandemic response and recovery.”

The organization says Gustafson is noted for being a skilled presenter, able to condense complex data into understandable information for British Columbians.

“I’m excited to welcome Dr. Gustafson to Island Health,” said Island Health President and CEO Kathy MacNeil. “We are fortunate to have such an experienced provincial health leader join our organization and provide executive leadership for our population and public health initiatives.”

She will remain in her role with the BCCDC until Sept. 2.

Stanwick announced his retirement last year after serving as the region’s chief medical health officer for 20 years.
