B.C. reports 743 new COVID-19 cases, 70 in Island Health

British Columbia health officials are reporting 743 new cases of COVID-19 for the entire province on Friday, with 70 linked to the Island Health region.

Within the Island Health region, there is currently a total of 717 active COVID-19 cases.

In a statement released to the media, Dr. Bonnie Henry says that 360 are in hospital with 137 people in critical care as a result of the virus. There are currently 5,969 active cases in British Columbia.

Since Thursday’s numbers, there have been 69 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 265 in the Fraser Health region, 70 in the Island Health region, 143 in the Interior Health region, 196 in the Northern Health region and no cases for people who reside outside of Canada.

There were five additional deaths related to the virus on Friday. This brings the provincial death total over the course of the pandemic to 2,001. None of the deaths in the last 24 hours were in the Island Health region.

Also as of Thursday, the total number of cases in British Columbia over the course of the pandemic has reached 192,491.

As for the Province’s total vaccination program, B.C. has now administered a total of 7,937,214 doses of COVID-19 immunizations.

Health officials say that equates to first doses for 89.1 per cent of all eligible adult British Columbians and 88.6 per cent of all eligible people 12 and older.

In addition, 83 per cent of all eligible adults have received their second dose, totalling 3,587,996 residents.

From Sept. 30 to Oct. 6, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 69.4% of cases and from Sept. 23 to Oct. 6 they accounted for 76.7% of hospitalizations.
