B.C. reports 277 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend, 12 on Vancouver Island

British Columbia health officials have reported 277 new cases and four deaths from COVID-19 since their last update on Friday.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. climbs to 146,453 while the province’s death toll now stands at 1,734.

Ninety-six of the new cases were recorded Friday to Saturday, 113 were recorded Saturday to Sunday 68 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours.

Of the new cases, 36 were recorded in Vancouver Coastal Health, 148 were in Fraser Health, 12 in Island Health, 63 in Interior Health, and  16 in Northern Health.

There are currently 1,537 active cases in the province and 136 people in hospital — 42 of whom are in intensive care.

A total of 143,147 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while 4,048,346 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide. Just under 76 per cent of all adults in B.C. and 74.1 per cent of those 12 and older have received their first dose of vaccine.

In Island Health, there are 55 active cases of COVID-19 — a decline of one case since Friday, according to Island Health’s COVID-19 dashboard.

The majority of those cases, 41 of them, are on the South Island, while the Central and North Island have seven cases each.

According to the BC Centre of Disease Control, two people are currently hospitalized for COVID-19 on Vancouver Island while none are in critical care.
