B.C. reports 1,618 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend, 20 deaths

Health officials in British Columbia are reporting 1,618 new COVID-19 cases and 20 new deaths over the weekend.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. climbs to 202,516 while the province’s death toll now stands at 2,129. The reporting period includes:

  • Oct. 22-23: 613 new cases
  • Oct. 23-24: 529 new cases
  • Oct. 24-25: 476 new cases

Of the new cases, 190 were recorded in Vancouver Coastal Health, 699 were in Fraser Health, 186 in Island Health, 254 in Interior Health, and 289 in Northern Health.

As for deaths, four were recorded in Fraser Health, three occurred in Vancouver Coastal Health, six were in Interior health, four were in Northern Health and three were in Island Health.

The three deaths in Island Health means a total of five deaths have been reported in the region since Oct. 22.

There are currently 4,966 active cases in the province and 366 people in hospital — 149 of whom are in intensive care.

The province marked a major milestone in regards to vaccinations, with 90 per cent of all eligible adults in B.C. now having received their first dose. Eighty-five per cent of residents have received two doses of vaccine.

A total of 195,055 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while 8,156,567 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide.

According to Health Minister Adrian Dix, 85 per cent of people in ICU due to COVID-19 were not fully vaccinated.

Out of 500 active COVID-19 cases in the Island Health region, 170 were on the South Island, 278 were on the Central Island and 52 were on the North Island, according to the health authority.

The BC Centre for Disease Control reports that out of 54 people currently hospitalized for COVID-19 in Island Health, 20 people are in critical care.

Since the pandemic began, there have been 10,194 cases reported, 499 total hospitalizations, and 9,522 recoveries recorded in the Island Health region.
