Health officials in British Columbia have reported an additional 820 COVID-19 cases and nine new deaths since their last update on Thursday.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. rose to 173,158 while the province’s death toll now stands at 1,856.

Of the new cases, 90 are in the Island Health region, which climbed to 539 active cases overall, 112 were recorded in Vancouver Coastal Health,  264 were in Fraser Health, 253 in Interior Health, and 101 in Northern Health.

There are currently 5,850 active cases in the province and 281 people in hospital — 135 of whom are in intensive care.

A total of  7,583,999 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide, with 85.5 per cent (3,962,256) of eligible people 12 and older receiving at least a first dose.

Officials say people who were not fully vaccinated accounted for 78 per cent of the 4,661 cases from Sept. 2 to 8.

They say people who are not vaccinated are 35 times more likely to be hospitalized than those who have had both doses.

Island Health is currently only reporting 463 active cases for the region, but its data can often differ from provincial totals.

That includes 80 active cases on the North Island, 202 on central Vancouver Island and 181 cases on the South Island.
