Another special weather statement issued for most of Vancouver Island

Environment Canada has issued another special weather statement for most of Vancouver Island, warning that showers, flurries and hail are possible Thursday night and Friday.

The special weather statement is in effect for north, inland, west and east Vancouver Island. On the eastern part of the island, the weather statement extends from Courtenay to Campbell River, Duncan to Nanaimo, and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay.

The weather agency had ended the previous special weather statement that was issued Thursday morning before issuing a new one later in the afternoon.

According to Environment Canada, a passage of a strong cold front has allowed freezing levels to plummet during the afternoon. A few centimetres of snow is possible over higher terrain and inland Thursday evening.

Thunderstorms producing small hail are possible near Vancouver Island on Thursday night and again on Friday throughout the region as an unseasonably cold pool of air in the upper atmosphere settles in.

Environment Canada said Friday will be an unsettled day of weather across the South Coast. There may be a mix of sunny periods, showers, flurries or thunderstorms with small hail.
