Alert Bay sees five council candidates, one mayoral step forward for election
Village of Alert Bay

Voters in Alert Bay will vote to see who will be the four councillors following this year’s municipal election.

The mayor, Dennis Buchanan, is the sole candidate who stepped forward to run, so he is acclaimed as the village’s mayor. He was also acclaimed in the 2018 election when he ran unopposed.

Buchanan is one of 11 mayors on Vancouver Island acclaimed to their role.

General voting day is on Oct. 15 at the Alert Bay Community Hall, and there will be advance voting on Oct. 5 at the Village Office. Both will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

School trustee candidates for the Vancouver Island North School District were acclaimed in the Alert Bay electoral area, so voters will not be voting for trustees.

There are five candidates running for council positions, four of which are incumbent councillors.

Casey Chapman is the only candidate who is not an incumbent.

Kane Gordon, Lisanne Granger, Larry Hill, and Veronica McGregor are incumbent councillors up for re-election.

In the 2018 election, voter turnout was 42.2 per cent with 177 people casting a ballot.
