The Victoria Police Department is investigating a Friday night assault that has resulted in one man sustaining ‘life-altering injuries.’

Patrol officers are currently seeking witnesses and information for the incident, which took place between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. on January 15.

Investigators say that the victim was walking through Bastion Square in Victoria when he approached a group of approximately 10 youth.

Police say that an unknown female youth with blonde hair threw a cup of water on the man. He was then “struck from behind” by an unknown person, reads a police report.

“There may have been a brief engagement prior to the assault.,” said Cst. Cam MacIntyre with Victoria police.

“However this was unprovoked and somewhat random. There is no good reason why this took place. There was that group of 10 to 15 youth, that he has some kind of interaction with before the assault took place.”

Officers are describing his injuries as “life-altering” but have not provided any further details.

He was transported to the hospital by BC Emergency Health Services following the incident.

VicPD investigators are asking to speak with anyone who was in the area at the time or may have witnessed the incident.

“It’s a central place in our community,” he said.

“It’s certainly not a hot-spot for crime or violence. It’s an area many of us in our community frequent and love to go to. So it is concerning to see that level of violence playing out at that location.”

Anyone with information on the assault is being asked to call the VicPD Report Desk at (250) 995-7654, extension 1.

The file currently remains under investigation.
