Island Health confirmed Thursday a second person has died in relation to a COVID-19 outbreak at Saanich Peninsula Hospital.

The health authority also says two additional staff members have tested positive for COVID-19.

Since the outbreak was declared on Dec. 1, there have been nine patients and eight staff members who have tested positive for the virus.

Island Health says out of respect for the privacy of the individual who passed away and their family, no further details are being released.

According to a media release, Island Health says testing continues to confirm the outbreak is limited to acute areas of the hospital and no new sources of transmission have been identified.

“Patients in the acute care areas continue to be closely monitored for symptoms and staff testing continues,” Island Health says in the release.

The hospital remains closed to acute admissions, but the emergency department is still open and Island Health encourages anyone who requires emergency care to visit.

“It is important to note that other outpatient services, including medical imaging and day surgery, are open and we want people to know that it is safe to access these services.”
