Ninety-seven rats are being cared for by the SPCA. (Victoria SPCA).

The Victoria SPCA said 97 domestic rats are in their care after they were surrendered from a low-income residence in the downtown area this week.

The SPCA did not provide the exact date the animals were surrendered but said the former owner is in hospital and is no longer able to take care of the animals.

The rats range in age from three weeks to two years and many of them are pregnant

Annie Prittie Bell, manager of the Victoria SPCA, said most of the rats are used to being handled and are very friendly.

“Some people are skittish when it comes to domestic rats, but they are actually intelligent and social animals who make great pets,” Bell said in a statement.

The Victoria SPCA is asking for financial donations to offset the cost of the rats’ care until homes can be found. They are also accepting smaller towels, Oxbow Essentials Adult Rat Food and jars of baby food.

“Obviously this intake of 97 small animals is putting a strain on our space and resources and there is a possibility that more may be coming in from the same residence,” says Annie Prittie Bell, manager of the Victoria SPCA.

Anyone who would like to donate money or materials is asked to visit the shelter at 3150 Napier Lane or go to spca.bc.ca/support.
