31-year-old cyclist arrested following road rage incident in Central Saanich

A Central Saanich cyclist has been arrested in connection with a road rage incident at the intersection of Oldfield Road and Keating Cross Road on Tuesday.

According to Central Saanich police, the cyclist, who is a 31-year-old man from Central Saanich has been arrested. The cyclist is facing charges of assault and mischief. He was taken into custody Thursday afternoon and was released on a promise to appear and an undertaking with conditions not to have any contact with the victim.

Police said on Sept. 12, a driver was going northbound on Oldfield Road when he passed a cyclist. There was a short exchange between the two and when they arrived at a nearby intersection, the cyclist got off his bike. A video captured by the driver, Steve Bengal, shows the cyclist kicking the vehicle, which caused significant damage. After kicking the vehicle in the video, the cyclist then reaches inside the window toward Bengal.

Police said the driver followed the cyclist to Stelly’s Cross Road and Maber Road where a second confrontation took place, which resulted in more damage to the vehicle. Bengal’s video was later posted to Facebook.

According to police, the identity of the cyclist will not be released until charges are approved by the Crown. The man’s next court appearance is on Oct. 25.
