A 23-year-old man is dead after an ATV accident near Nanaimo early Sunday morning.

Nanaimo RCMP said at around 2 a.m., a man suffered life-threatening injuries in an ATV accident on a logging road about half a kilometre from the South Forks Road and Nanaimo Lakes Road intersection.

Paramedics took the man to the local hospital and he was then airlifted to a hospital in Vancouver. Police said due to the severity of his injuries, he was pronounced dead at 7 a.m.

Nanaimo RCMP said they have learned the man was out for a late-night ride with two friends when he lost control of his ATV as he rounded a corner. He was thrown into nearby bushes. His friends who were in a side-by-side UTV (utility-task vehicle) carried the man to a nearby road and called 911.

Police are still investigating the ATV crash and are looking at a number of factors, including the speed of the ATV, the terrain and the ATV itself. The mechanical inspection on the ATV will be done this week.

The name of the man who died has not been released by police.
