Myla Bui, 11, raised more than $31,000 for the Help Fill A Dream Foundation by folding thousands of paper cranes.

What started as a gesture to give back has snowballed into a lot of work and a significant donation today from an 11-year-old girl.

Leila Bui was left in a wheelchair after being hit by a car mid-crosswalk in 2017.

Since then, the Help Fill A Dream Foundation has stepped up for the family, giving them a new van, and walkway to help the family deal with their new reality.

So as a way to give back, Bui’s 11-year-old sister, Myla, started a fundraiser last year pledging to make a paper crane for every dollar donated.

Her goal was to raise $2,002, but the fundraiser took off.

On Saturday, Myla and her family presented a cheque to the foundation for more than $31,000 to the Help Fill A Dream Foundation.

“Her goal was two full mobiles but in a short period of time it just blew up so we’re at 31,000 mobiles that we have to make so but the community has been there to support us,” said Kairry Nguyen, Bui’s mother.

The family also gave 1,001 paper cranes to a couple of families who the Help Fill A Dream Foundation is also helping.
