54 year old man remains on life support after being hit while walking on sidewalk.
A 54 year-old man was critically injured Monday when he was hit by a car on the sidewalk on Bowen Road near Frank Crane arena.
“He was walking on the sidewalk and a car drove up on to the curb and hit him” said his niece Randi Knighton in an interview with CHEK News.
The victim is 54 year old Brian Knighton, a man who was just getting his life back on track after some recent troubles and even homelessness.
On Monday afternoon around 1:50pm he never even saw what hit him.
“He just happened to be by the bus stop and happened to be walking by at that time and so his back actually would have been to the car and the car drove southbound and inexplicably went up on the sidewalk and struck this male” said Nanaimo RCMP Constable Gary O’Brien.
“They were going pretty fast apparently because he went flying 50 feet and so I mean I don’t even think they braked you know so I mean it was pretty bad” said Randi Knighton.
The suspect vehicle then fled the scene, never stopping leaving the victim’s family stunned.
“You know honestly it kind of disgusts me. You know I’m in tears if I hit a bunny you know and just the thought of a human being leaving him there, I’m sorry” added Randi Knighton.
Then a few hours later a woman did turn herself into police.
“A 59 year old female came into the office last night, identified herself as the driver and provided a statement to investigators. She hasn’t been charged, the investigation is continuing and we have located her car” said O’brien.
“I have heard that the lady has turned herself in and I’m happy and I’m relieved and she’s made the right choice” said Darrin Szaszik, the victim’s brother in law.
If you have any information about the incident you’re asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP.
