WATCH: With royal fever gripping Victoria, fans hope Will and Kate will be ‘game’ for a puck drop at the Victoria Royals game against Prince George. Tess van Straaten reports.
From canoeing on their first trip to Canada to playing cricket in Mumbai, Will and Kate seem up for anything.
So when it was revealed the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are coming to Victoria September 24th, The Q’s morning show producer had a wild idea.
“I was thinking to myself, that’s exactly when the Royals kick off the season!” Graham Caddy says. “I wonder what the chances are that those things are going to line up?”
It turns out, the Victoria Royals hockey team, named for our royal connection, is playing at Save on Foods Memorial Centre the day the real Royals arrive.
And — in an even bigger coincidence — the Royals are playing the team from Prince George.
With the real Prince George and Princess Charlotte expected to accompany their parents, Caddy pitched his idea live on air.
“The stars are aligning here,” Caddy told listeners. “How neat would that really be to have Prince George drop the puck?”
Caddy told CHEK News it seemed like a no-brainer.
“Everybody loves that cute little guy, how great would that really be for him to drop the puck at a Royals game against Prince George?” Caddy says.
The Victoria Royals quickly jumped on the idea, tweeting a photo of the Royal Family in Royals jerseys.
“It would be awesome!” Victoria Royals general manager Cam Hope says. “I mean, hey, why not? We’re the Royals, we’re playing Prince George and it’s the opening weekend!”
Queen Elizabeth dropped puck at Vancouver Canuck’s game
The idea isn’t as crazy as it might sound.
Royalty met hockey royalty when Queen Elizabeth and Wayne Gretzky dropped the puck at a Vancouver Canucks Game in 2002.
And with the Royal Highnesses hoping to empower young people and encourage active living on their second Canadian tour, proponents says it’s a win-win.
CHEK News called Kensington Palace to ask if the Royals might be ‘game’ and while the palace couldn’t provide an official statement, they asked us to forward the details for consideration before a full itinerary is released.
“Realistically, it’s a long shot but I think if you don’t shoot for the moon, you’re never going to make it,” an enthusiastic Caddy says.
If they do come, the Royals are promising to give the royals the red carpet treatment.
“I think they would look great in Royal blue,” Hope says. “If they decide to come, we’ll give them free jerseys!”
An offer even royalty, might find hard to refuse.
