Multiple fire crews were at work throughout the day Saturday fighting a brush fire reported in the early morning hours at the Heal’s Rifle Range near Durrance Lake in Saanich.
The response involved firefighters from Saanich, Central Saanich, the BC Coastal Fire Centre and, because the property belongs to the Department of National Defence, fire crews from CFB Esquimalt took command.
The fire was small in size, burning through an area about 30 metres by 30 metres in size, but people as far away as Stelly’s Cross Road reported smelling smoke. Crews were able to gain the upper hand had the fire in the “mop up” phase by around noon.
Investigators say the fire is considered suspicious.
