This Week in History: Celebrating Chinese New Year in the 1930’s

Gung Hey Fat Choy! A grocery store, in Victoria’s historic Chinatown, owned by the Quan family, served as bank, post office and community centre. It was central to the most important traditional holiday, Chinese New Year. The store imported many of the treats associated with the celebrations, sweets, flowers and even the familiar red envelopes. Evidence of the original store still remains.
