It’s an iconic fixture of Vancouver Island’s Alberni Valley and today the Martin Mars took to the skies once again.
With its distinctive rumble, the largest flying tanker in the world was put into motion on Sprout Lake this morning.
The Mars “Hawaii” made its first stop in Cowichan Lake, where it scooped up a load of water.
It dropped the load near the Duncan airport before flying over Victoria Airport and Victoria’ Inner Harbour, then looping back over the San Juan Islands before making its return trip over Cowichan Valley, Nanaimo, Parksville, Qualicum and back to Port Alberni.
The purpose of today’s flight was for pilot recertification. The Martin Mars is now headed to an airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
