Victoria police say they dealt with fewer calls for service and made fewer arrests compared to past Canada Days, while people came downtown in droves to enjoy the festivities.
With Canada Day falling on a Friday, police were concerned there could be problems. But Victoria Police say they had 158 calls from 6pm Friday to 6am Saturday morning, compared to 174 in the same period last year. In total, 36 people were arrested and most of those arrests related to drinking.
An estimated 70,000 people flooded Victoria’s Inner Harbour for Canada Day celebrations, including 2,500 red-and-white-clad volunteers joining together to form a human flag on the BC legislature lawn.
Music and other celebrations culminated with a spectacular fire works show over the harbour.
