For the past 80 years, the Victoria Foundation has been connecting financial gifts from donors, with causes that money will support.
It’s an investment in people, projects and non-profit organizations.
Now, the Foundation has decided to throw an 80th birthday party, but you get the presents, with Victoria Foundation Day.
“We were founded in 1936, and this is our way of celebrating that occasion” explains Victoria Foundation CEO, Sandra Richardson.
And it’s celebrating by opening the doors of twenty-five non-profit organizations across Greater Victoria that are supported by the Foundation.
Opening the doors to the public, for one day, for free.
As Richardson points out, “there’s probably a place that you’ve always wanted to go and explore, here’s your opportunity to go out and do that for free.”
And so, Saturday, September 17, is Victoria Foundation Day.
Venues vary from Boulders Climbing Gym in Central Saanich, to Abkhazi Garden in Fairfield.
Cathy Armstong from The Land Conservancy of BC says “We’ll open up the [Abkhazi] Gardens for the day and hope that lots of people stop by. Many people don’t know about this secret gem that exists in Victoria. It’s a beautiful spot any day of the year.”
The Robert Bateman is part of Victoria Foundation Day too.
Peter Ord, from The Robert Bateman Centre proudly states “we’ve been such great partners.
“They’ve really helped us develop so many programs, and we’re also really quiet impressed by the work they do in the community.”
“I think the neat thing” says Richardson, “is for the people to understand the work of non-profits.
“You know, the work of running a gallery like this. What it takes. How many volunteers. And just for them to understand what a giving community we have, and how they can build community as well.”
Adds Ord, about the Robert Bateman Centre, “we’ve been here three years, and still we get a lot of people in the community coming here for the first time, so this just gives another dimension to that.”
Other venues include Craigdarroch Castle, Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, to name just a few.
