WATCH: Businesses in Victoria are using Pokemon Go to ‘lure’ people into their shops. Mary Griffin reports.
It’s on track to becoming the hottest video game in history and Pokemon Go shows no sign of cooling off.
Lures can be set to attract Pokemon Go players to certain areas.
“A lure is a Pokemon tool that you put on a Pokemon Stop to attract Pokemon. People can gather around there and they can all see the same Pokemon that you are seeing,” said player Diego Gocher.
Businesses are starting to recognize the powerful marketing tool the game can be.
“I definitely noticed people coming in because of lures, like I’ve noticed that if there is a lure up, more people will come in,” said Caileigh Franco from Pig Restaurant.
It’s the same story a few blocks away.
At West Coast Waffles, the Pokemon business came as a surprise.
“We didn’t do it. The game just popped up, and I think it says, the best waffles ever, so we didn’t know that,” said Santana Hogben, Waffle Shop Assistant Manager.
Some businesses are randomly chosen to be lures for Pokemon, others pay a small price to attract players.
Tourism Victoria’s Trina Mousseau is a player.
She says Pokemon is an easy marketing tool for businesses.
“It’s really important to us because we’ve got a lot of small to medium sized businesses that are taking advantage of this phenomenon and becoming Pokestops, and Pokegyms,” she said.
“And we want to make sure that we’re promoting that giving them more exposure, and you know, bring more customers to their door.”
And businesses are also cashing in by getting active on social media, and letting players know they’re a Pokemon Go destination.
