Vancouver Island’s first baby of 2018 arrived at 1:23 a.m. on Jan. 1 at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, weighing nine pounds 11 ounces.

Bryce Taylor and Paige Playford have named their son Chase Luca Taylor.

“We were just hoping for healthy but it’s cool that he’s the first baby on Vancouver Island of 2018,” said his exhausted mother.

Playford went into labour around 7 a.m. on Dec. 31.

Their son’s due date was yesterday but both parents admit they had their eye on the clock.

Playford says this labour was “a little more rough” than when their daughter was born.

“When I heard he was 9 lbs 11 I was like ‘Wow. He is a big baby!’ she said.
