All six NDP MPs on Vancouver Island are throwing their support behind current leader Thomas Mulcair ahead of the party’s convention and leadership review next month.
The move came in the form of an open letter to NDP Members posted by Victoria MP Murray Rankin late today.
It is supported by the other five including Gord Johns, Alistair MacGregor, Randall Garrison, Sheila Malcolmson and Rachel Blaney.
In the letter, Rankin writes that Muclair is a “leader eager to learn…, and has a drive to win second to none.”
Mulcair has come under fire from some NDP Members following the party’s disappointing third place finish in last Fall’s election.
The Quebec MP and former provincial cabinet minister has said he has no plans to step aside but his leadership is expected to be challenged at the April convention.
Three of his former Quebec NDP caucus colleagues who were defeated in October signed a letter last week calling for “renewal” saying the party had lost its way.
But Vancouver Island was one of the few success stories for the NDP in October with the party taking six of seven seats.
Mulcair visited Nanaimo and Victoria earlier this month as part of a pre-budget consultation tour of the country.
The open letter says Island MPs support his leadership without reservation.
“Now is not the time to turn our backs on what works but to rebuild based on those successes. Tom understands this. We support Tom Mulcair to lead our party into the future and are encouraging all delegates to do the same,” Rankin writes.
The NDP convention is scheduled to be held in Edmonton from April 8th to 10th.
