Nanaimo RCMP say a 56-year-old man has died as a result of injuries suffered when he fell as the BC Transit bus he was riding on narrowly avoided a collision.
The incident happened near the intersection of Bowed and Labieux Roads around 5pm Friday.
Police say the bus was travelling westbound on Labieux when a pickup truck towing a trailer exited the parking lot of a Mid-Island Co-Op gas station at the intersection. When the bus driver braked to avoid a collision, the passenger fell from his seat and struck his head on the floor.
The man was unconscious when paramedics rushed him to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Nanaimo RCMP, the BC Coroners Service and Regional District of Nanaimo Transit officials are all investigating. Police say a mechanical inspection on the bus is pending. The other passengers were transferred to another bus and RCMP Victim Services is providing supports.
RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien says they would like to speak with the driver of the pickup, who may have been unaware of what happened and didn’t stop at the scene. The truck is described as an older model, possibly a Dodge, with lettering for a flooring company on the side of the trailer it was towing.
