Port Alberni RCMP are on the lookout for those responsible for vandalizing the “Welcome to Bamfield” sign in Bamfield Village and stealing three small carvings that adorned it.
The sign is a focal point to all entering the Bamfield area and it had four carvings on it that surrounded a map of the area.
Sometime in August, the sign on Bamfield Road was vandalized on at least two occasions and the irreplaceable carvings were taken.
They once included a Steller’s Jay, an eagle, a bear and a tree, the only remaining carving is the tree.
The eagle and the bear are the latest carvings to be stolen from the sign.
The sign and its carvings were made by Al Porter, who was an area resident at the time, and they represent his artistic legacy in the community.
Now residents are seeking answers as to what happened and they want to get the artwork back.
The Bamfield Community Affairs Society is offering a reward.
If anyone has any information, they are asked to contact the Port Alberni Detachment at 250-723-2424 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).
