UPDATE: Motorcyclist has died after serious crash on West Coast. It was one of two serious highway crashes on Vancouver Island on Sunday.
Two life-threatening accidents happened on Vancouver Island highways Sunday afternoon.
The first happened on Highway 4 west of Port Alberni, in the area known as Hydro Hill.
A motorcycle collided with a truck around 3:30pm and the motorcyclist was killed.
It’s not yet clear what caused the crash and the highway was closed down for several hours as police investigated.
Shortly before 4:30pm, another serious crash happened near Lantzville, near Mallard Way.
We’re told three or four people were injured, and the injuries were serious enough that an air ambulance was called but it couldn’t land on the road.
The accident caused lengthy delays, especially for southbound traffic.
There was also another crash in Nanaimo that same afternoon.
The single-vehicle accident sent a man to hospital with unknown injuries as well.
Nanaimo Fire Rescue was called just after 2:30pm to extricate a man driving a blue van, which flipped onto its side after hitting a light pole at the corner of Terminal Drive and Cypress Street.
Firefighters say he was alone in the vehicle, and was conscious when he was rushed to hospital.
