Update: Salvage experts are on scene. A tug boat is attempting to pull one of the barges off the beach at high tide.
There were some tense moments in the waters off Dallas Road in Victoria tonight after two barges carrying a crane and construction materials were set adrift.
The barges were reportedly being towed by a tug from the new Coho Ferry Terminal construction site in Victoria’s Inner Harbour.
Around 8pm, a rope broke cutting loose both barges.
Victoria Police, the Victoria Fire Department, the City of Victoria and Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Victoria all responded to the incident.
The barge carrying the crane wound up slamming into the rocks near Dallas Road and Olympia Avenue in James Bay a short while later.
The other barge carrying the construction debris wound up beached near Dallas Road and Cook Street.
The tug made it back to port without further incident.
The barges are being secured and will be left where they are until its safe to move them.
The Coast Guard is monitoring the situation and will monitor the salvage efforts this morning. No pollution has been observed at this time.
