Greater Victoria school wins BCAA Play Here contest.
It’s been an anxious few days for staff, students and parents at Torquay Elementary waiting to hear if their school had won a brand new playground.
Torquay’s old playground was torn down five months ago over safety concerns so the school entered a contest for a chance to win a new one.
Voting closed in the “BCAA Play Here” contest on June 30 and Torquay was in a close battle with a facility in Lilloet.
Today BCAA announced that it would award both Torquay and Lilloet the $100,000 first prize.
Torquay parent and PAC member, Jennifer Hodi says, “I felt for Lilloet and I know a lot of people in Victoria and around BC wanted them to have something too. So to find out that we not only got the full $100,000 but also Lilloet and the finalists too, it was overwhelming.
In addition to the 100-thousand dollars given to Torquay and Lilloet, three other finalists were awarded 20-thousand dollars each.
They were among over 500 play space nominations from across BC. More than 300-thousand votes were cast overall.
