Three people were taken to hospital on Thursday following a serious crash on Highway 4 about 20 kilometres west of Port Alberni.

The collision happened just after 12 noon in a construction zone.

A 74-year old from Tofino was driving a pick-up truck westbound and was passing other vehicles in the oncoming lane when a septic truck, with its turn signal on, made a left turn right into his path.

The pickup collided at full speed with the driver’s door of the septic truck before continuing into a ditch where it rolled on its side, trapping the driver.

Several other motorists stopped to help, including some off duty Shawnigan Lake fire fighters and a doctor.

The pickup was secured and the driver was extricated.

Two of the three people in the pickup and the driver of the septic truck received serious non-life threatening injuries and were taken to hospital.

Highway 4 was closed in both directions for about two and half hours as emergency personnel attended to the crash.

The collision is still under investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or the events leading up to it, is asked to contact Cst. Wasylien of the Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424.
