Dave Wilson and Wendy Harder sold everything they had, left their home in Saskatoon, and arrived at Mile Zero, to begin a walk across Canada.
Their goal? To raise awareness about mental health issues.
Dave has struggled with severe depression.
“Depression itself is a tough journey, and we figured this walk is equivalent.”
“It got to a point where I decided, before I kill myself, I’m going to go for a walk.”
Along with talking about mental health with those they will meet on their journey, the couple want to stress the importance of shared parenting.
“I haven’t seen my daughter for almost two years” explains Wilson.
Wilson and Harder have a Facebook page – the Backpacking Yuppies – where they write about their adventures, and their challenges.
“If I can save anyone’s life along this journey, open up the eyes to depression, that it’s a real problem and it needs to be addressed now…” Wilson explains, choking back emotion.
“Life is life, and we need to continue it.”
