A grey day in B.C. Capital didn’t dampen spirits for the start of the 73rd Swiftsure International Yacht Race.
Thousands of spectators gathered along the shoreline to take in the spectacle.
And at first, winds between 10 and 12 knots, along with favourable ocean currents, made for a good start.
But winds died down significantly as the boats got closer to Race Rocks.
There are four long race courses, with boats from all over the Pacific Northwest and sailors coming from all over the world to take part.
With 206 entrants, organizers say this year has the largest field in more than a decade. Most of the boats are expected back tomorrow morning.
