A house in Nanaimo has some major damage after an SUV drove through a fence and a wall of the home Monday night.

Nanaimo RCMP said the crash happened at around 11:25 p.m. at the Ashlar Avenue and Bowen Road intersection. Police said they received reports that a newer model black SUV drove through a fence and the main supporting wall of a home. According to police, the car was driving southbound along Bowen Road when the crash happened.

The 32-year-old homeowner was not injured but the collision caused major structural damage to her house and the surrounding yard. The 23-year-old suspected male driver was arrested at the scene for alleged impaired driving. Police said when officers arrived, the man was allegedly still behind the wheel of the vehicle and was attempting to reverse out of the yard.

Police also said there were two passengers in the vehicle that fled prior to police arriving.

The homeowner was offered short-term accommodation by the homeowner but she declined after a nearby neighbour took her in for the evening. The man who was arrested provided two breath tests at the Nanaimo RCMP detachment. Police said both tests were over the legal limit.

The man was served with a promise to appear and police are recommending charges of impaired driving. He also received a violation ticket under the Motor Vehicle Act for driving without a valid driver’s licence.
