A suspect is in police custody after an hours-long standoff at a Tim Hortons on Gorge Road East in Victoria.
VicPD were called to the Dunedin Plaza around 2:30 this afternoon after a man barricaded himself in the washroom.
He was also reported to carrying a weapon according to initial reports given to police.
“Our guys arrived on scene and were faced with a male in the washroom, and the situation quickly escalated,” said Victoria Police Insp. Keith Lindner.
“The male barricaded himself in the washroom.”
Staff at an adjacent restaurant tell CHEK News that they were asked to lock the door and stay inside.
A police car could be seen being used to barricade the door of the Tim Hortons and negotiators were called to the scene.
Officers could also be seen inside the establishment.
More than a dozen officers including the Critical Incident Response Team were called in but VicPD said there was no danger to the public.
The standoff went on for several hours when, at about 7:30 p.m., a canine unit could be seen entering the business.
Police also confirm pepper spray was used and officers were seen wearing gas masks.
Soon after, the lone male suspect was taken out of the establishment in handcuffs and put into a police car.
“Four and half or five hours later its ended with the male in custody, ” said Insp. Lindner
“A whole bunch of things happened in between, that we’re still sorting out.”
Police say the man is known to them.
More details about the incident are expected to be provided on Thursday.
