A new state-of-the-art animal centre in Nanaimo is now officially open.
The multi-million dollar facility replaces the old BC SPCA shelter in the Harbour City.
The new Westwood Road facility is on almost 12 acres of land.
Its new name is the Nanaimo and District Community Animal Centre and it cost $3.4 million dollars, which was funded by the BC Government, the City of Nanaimo and SPCA donors.
The new shelter building has indoor-outdoor areas for cats and shared ‘apartments’ for dogs to encourage natural movement, as well as many other state-of-the-art features to offer the best care possible.
The new centre also features two fenced dog parks and an animal washing station, with all proceeds going to help abused and neglected animals. The shelter helps more than 1,300 animals every year.
