WATCH: Sophie’s Bagels food truck brings iconic Montreal-style bagel brand to Victoria. Tess van Straaten reports.
A float plane lands in Victoria’s iconic Inner Harbour as Sophie Siegel early awaits her delivery.
But this isn’t just any delivery.
The boxes on the Harbour Air flight are full of fresh-baked bagels.
That’s because Sophie is bringing her family’s famous Montreal-style bagels to Victoria.
“There is a huge family element of pride in this and if I can continue on the legend of what Siegel’s Bagels is and do my part, then that makes me very happy,” says Sophie Siegel.
Siegel’s Bagels a Vancouver institution
Sophie’s father Joe opened Siegel’s Bagels in Kitsilano more than 25 years ago and it’s now a Vancouver institution.
She’s now serving up the bagels, with all the fixings, at her Victoria food truck to a whole new market in the B.C. Capital.
The iconic bagels are baked in Kits each morning and then flown over on the first flight and they’re still arm to the touch when they arrive here.
Sophie just hopes it will be a recipe for success as she carries on the family tradition.
“I love to see people’s expressions when I give them the first sandwich out of the truck because there’s always that sense of, ‘Oh, now I get it!’ and I just smile.”
