WATCH: RCMP rescue 125 crabs from poachers and all but one were under size and the vast majority female
Sooke RCMP rescued 125 crabs from poachers on Canada Day.
All but one of the crabs were under-size and the vast majority of the crabs were female.
The illegally-caught crabs were seized near the Sooke Pier early Friday morning during a routine patrol.
Police say three men fled the scene and threw crabbing gear in the bushes.
They were apprehended a short time later.
The men had buckets of live crabs and there were also crabs in a vehicle nearby.
It’s illegal to remove female Dungeness or red rock crabs but 110 of the 125 crabs seized were female and 124 were under size.
Three View Royal men, aged 43 to 69, were arrested along with a 43-year-old woman in the vehicle.
The crabs weren’t injured and were returned to the ocean.
