Sidney-North Saanich RCMP say they’ve taken two youth into custody after a Sidney community patrol volunteer was shot in the head early by someone wielding a BB gun early Sunday morning.
It happened at the intersection of McDonald Park Road and Resthaven Drive, near North Saanich Middle School, around 1am. The volunteer was driving through the intersection with his window rolled down when he and reported hearing a loud bang and then felt a sharp pain in his head.
Police say he was shot with a BB gun and a small pellet was found in the back seat of his vehicle.
Cpl. Chris Manseau said the volunteers don’t drive marked cars, or wear any clothing identifying them as members of the patrol group, so police don’t believe the man was targeted.
“We think it was just a random mischief incident at this time, [but] it’s still under investigation,” he said.
RCMP were on scene within minutes and say it’s lucky the victim, who was treated at the scene by BC Ambulance, wasn’t more seriously hurt.
Two young people were taken into custody a few hours later and a BB gun seized.
