Shamrocks fans are breathing a collective sigh of relief after their team’s 14-11 series clinching win last night at the Q Centre.
The Victoria Shamrocks were on the brink of disaster. Entering Game 7 the defending Mann-Cup champs had dropped three straight games to the 4-seed Burnaby Lakers. The last team to lose a series when up 3-0 was the 1980 Coquitlam Adanacs. Despite out-playing the Lakers in Games 5 and 6, the Shamrocks squandered leads and were stymied by Lakers goaltender Zach Boychuk. Coach Bob Heyes said he needed his veteran players to be at their best in game 7.
Cory Conway, Corey Small and Rhys Duch were sensational. The trio combined for 18 points en route to a 14-11 victory.
But it doesn’t get any easier from here. The Rocks host a very well-rested Maple Ridge Burrards team in the WLA final starting Wednesday night at the Q Centre.
