Deadline for Greater Victoria’s sewage September 30th
The Strait of Juan de Fuca, where every day more than a hundred million litres of sewage from Greater Victoria flows into its waters.
In 2006, then Environment Minister Barry Penner announced the region would have to build a sewage treatment facility.
“They now have legal requirement to come back to me with firm plan about how they will treat their sewage so no longer question of should they.
It’s matter of how.”
A decade later, and still no sewage treatment plant.
“Hi, I’m Peter Fassbender.
Pleasure to meet you.”
In April, BC’s Sports and Community Development Minister Peter Fassbender agreed to help local politicians.
“We’ll wait to close the room.”`
On Wednesday, meeting behind closed doors with the Capital Regional District board, Fassbender outlined the concerns of the province and Ottawa.
Costs of the project are ballooning.
Originally priced at 784 million dollars, it’s now estimated to be more than one billion dollars.
Some of the highlights of spending; by 2011 24 million spent on planning and buying land.
A year later, another 12 million to establish a civilian commission overseeing the project, consulting costs for an engineering firm.
In 2013, the CRD spent 17 million dollars buying this property on Viewfield Road, that’s in addition to the 290,000 dollar annual salary for Albert Sweetnam, and fifty thousand to a communications firm.
In 2015, the CRD fired Sweetnam, the project’s director, and had to pay him 500,000 dollars.
They paid for 250,00 in fees to an technical oversight panel and engineering work.
Add 20 million dollars for a pumping station, it totals 65 million dollars, at least, so far in costs.
Now with half a billion in funding at risk, the CRD is facing a tight deadline according to Fassbender.
“I think there are some clear deadlines that are very short.
September 30th as far as the federal government is concerned.
So, there is a lot of work that needs to be done, given the board’s decision.”
Political signs are pointing back to Esquimalt’s McLoughlin Point as the logical location.
