Crossbows, replica firearms, tasers, and street drugs were just some of the items seized from a home across from a playground and ball diamond on Marigold Avenue
Saanich Police have arrested a man with a lengthy criminal history after a search warrant turned up a cache of weapons and drugs.
The drugs found at the home in the 800-block of Marigold Avenue include GHB, crystal meth, heroin, marijuana, and crack cocaine — police estimate the street value at $20,000.
Police also found both real and replica firearms, knives, crossbows, and even a taser that looks like a flashlight.
The seizure follows a two-month investigation by Saanich Police Property Crime and Drug investigators.
CHEK news spoke with the homeowner where the search warrant was executed, and he said his son and his son’s girlfriend live in the basement and were taken into custody.
The elderly man said he was shocked to discover what was happening in his own basement, and that drugs and weapons were found there.
Saanich police say 41-year-old Randy Patrick Smith, and 38-year-old Tammy Marie Jasper are facing numerous weapons and drugs charges.
Smith, who is well-known to police, remains in custody.
What disturbed police the most about the bust is that the home is directly across the street from Hyacinth Park, a popular play area for children.
“When you’re setting up shop right across the street from a local park I mean that’s extremely concerning. I mean this behaviour is concerning anyway, however we’re extremely concerned when it involves children and vulnerable groups like that,” said Sergeant Jereme Leslie.
Karen Coombes has lived in the area for 30 years, and was stunned to learn what had happened in her normally quiet neighbourhood.
“I come here to walk dogs, and kids come here to play with their families and stuff so you know it’s not something you want in your neighbourhood,” said Coombes.
But Saanich Police say the community is a little safer tonight after taking such a significant amount of drugs, weapons, and other criminal paraphernelia off the street.
